Other than the difference in driver software, the K5100M and GTX 880M have the exact same GPU core, so the general compute performance should be nearly identical.

Nvidia provides the Quadro cards with special drivers that can allow for increased performance in certain types of workloads and can also allow for different types of computation to be done (btw, you cannot install Quadro drivers onto a GeForce card). Being a GeForce, the GTX 880M in the AW17 is made as a gaming card and thusly will not come with the more advanced driver software that the Quadro GPUs have. The way I see it, the only 'real' difference between them would be the class of GPU. For the Precision M6800, I can get up to 3 hard drives and 1.536TB of total SSD storage, while the Alienware 17 has 2 hard drives with 256 GB SSD and 1TB 5400RPM SATA. I need to upgrade to a new laptop and I am considering the Alienware 17 and the Precision M6800. I frequently am topping out the 16GB memory and the video card struggles with the 3D visualization that I need to do.

I am traveling to different cities every month, so I need a laptop instead of a workstation.
